Moturoa Substation

Powerco Transmission Services’ sister company Independent Transmission Services has purchased the New Plymouth Moturoa Zone Substation from Transpower.

The substation consists of two 33/11kV transformers with a capacity of 14/23 MVA. It supplies the western end of New Plymouth out to Oakura, in Taranaki.

Some remedial work is required, including:

  • Installation of bunding and an in-ground oil interceptor tank. The bunding will surround both tranformers.
  • Replace the existing 11kV incomer cables between the two transformers and the 11kV switchboard.
  • Replace the neutral current transformer on transformer T1
  • Replace the southern boundary fence.

Substation History

When the New Plymouth Power Station and associated Grid Injection Point was built in the early to mid 1970s, the New Zealand Electricity Department (predecessor to Transpower) built a 33/11kV substation to enable the New Plymouth Municipal Electricity Department to supply the Moturoa area.
