Caring for our planet is everyone’s responsibility. If everyone does their bit – at work and at home – the environment will be in a better shape for generations to come.
Powerco has introduced several programmes and projects that focus on looking after the environment.
Enviro-mark NZ Certification
We are working through the five levels of the Enviro-mark NZ Certification Programme.
There are five levels of the Enviro-mark programme, and Powerco intends to work through the requirements of each to achieve diamond certification. Our Liardet St, Junction St, Palmerston North, Tauranga and Wellington Offices all have Diamond level. Powerco’s gas and electricity networks have Gold.

Workplace Sustainability Team
Powerco has established a Workplace Sustainability Team, made up of 10 staff volunteers. The team meets regularly and works together on sustainable business projects. Since the team’s inception, there has been an increase in employee participation in sustainability and environmental events.
A month-long “switch it off” campaign has been held to see which offices could save the most power. The campaign resulted in an average of 20% power savings across Powerco for March 2010 compared with March 2009. Overall, Powerco expects to save nearly $25,000 per annum from the campaign. The Information Services Department took the opportunity to save more electricity through a server optimisation project, with savings of $85,000 worth of electricity per year.
Each year, Powerco promotes of the world-wide event Earth Hour, which encourages everyone to turn off their lights for one hour each year.

Waste Reduction and Prevention Scheme
We have implemented a Waste Reduction and Prevention Scheme, which has a goal of a 40% reduction in waste sent to the landfill. Standardised waste and recycling systems have been rolled out across all our offices. The scheme has led to significant changes to how waste is disposed of, with a commercial-sized worm farm at Powerco’s New Plymouth offices reducing the amount of waste sent to the landfill from the site by 33%.
Powerco has redesigned a significant portion of its main depot in New Plymouth. The need for increased office space has resulted in the renovation of an existing warehouse into an open plan office. Powerco worked closely with a team of architects to develop a green building with sustainable features. Three light wells reach down from the ceiling, bringing additional light into the interior of the building. Water is heated by solar panels on the roof.
Coromandel Volt Line
The environment was at the forefront of our mind when planning the Coroglen to Kaimarama subtransmission line. The Coromandel peninsular is home to some of the most scenic areas in the region and the line has been designed to avoid areas of significant biodiversity where possible. However, it is not possible to build the entire line without the need to cross some areas that need trees removed. To offset the potential biodiversity losses, we are planting two trees in a bush reserve for every one that is removed.
