Our Business

Our business is in lines and pipes, the vital infrastructure that connects homes and businesses with the electricity and gas they need. It’s our job to manage and deliver a high quality, reliable supply of electricity and natural gas across our networks. No network company can guarantee an uninterrupted supply of energy to customers and our focus is to ensure our networks are operated safely and reliably through prudent, effective and efficient investments, maintenance and management.

We don’t generate electricity, and we don’t sell it to you either. Think of us as the delivery people, transporting the energy for the retailer consistently and efficiently to ensure that you can count on having the energy you need all day, every day.

Powerco is:

• New Zealand's second largest natural gas distribution company by customer connections – around 100,000
• New Zealand's second-largest electricity distribution company by customer connections – around 320,000
• The largest electricity and second largest gas distributor in terms of network length – electricity 30,000 km, gas 6,170 km
• Energy distributor to the largest area in New Zealand (39,000 sq km)
• One of only two of the country's dual-energy distributors.

Powerco's energy distribution networks spread across the upper-central, central and lower areas of New Zealand's North Island, supplying energy to more than 420,000 consumers.

Our experience with energy distribution in New Zealand spans more than a century. The business has grown and diversified immensely in the past 10 years from the amalgamations and acquisitions of various electricity and natural gas distribution and service companies.
